Local Fourth Grader off to National Spelling Bee

South Putnam Elementary School Fourth-Grader Addision Hughes has won the regional spelling bee and will compete in the National Spelling Bee Contest in Washington D.C. Addison’s mom Beverly Hughes says that she was shocked at Addison’s talent.

[B. HUGHES] "We were just completely floored at the regional spelling bee when he just kept spelling correctly, and we are very happy for him."

Addison gained an interest in spelling when he joined the school’s Spell Bowl Team.

[A. HUGHES] "I’ve always been a good speller, and in the 3rd grade when I got the chance to join up for Spell Bowl, I decided I wanted to put the skills to the test into something that was fun for me, but challenging."

More than 300 students will compete at the Spelling Bee. Addison feels confident that he will make it to make the top 50 contestants. Addison’s travels will be funded by The Tribune Star, Terre Haute Savings Bank, and Altrusa International.
